sponsoring a student at mitrata

What you need to know

How will my donation help my sponsored child?

While boarding at the Mitrata Boarding Hostel, your sponsorship will ensure that the student you sponsor will receive a full education up to Year 10.

Your sponsored child will be enrolled at the nearby Golma Devi Primary and Lower Secondary School, which is just a short walk from Mitrata. At primary school, (Kindergarten to Year 6) she will study Nepali, social studies, science, maths, art and sport. At the lower secondary school (Year 7 to 10) she will also study English, chemistry, biology and philosophy.

In Year 10, she will sit the Secondary Education Examination (SEE). If she is successful and passes her examination, she can continue her education in Year 11 and 12 at a college of her choice.

Her choice of college and subjects will very much depend on her SEE result, but there are a wide range of subjects to suit all applicants, such as science, management, IT, hospitality, accountancy and nursing etc..

If your sponsored child elects to continue her education at college, she must leave Mitrata and either return to her own home and enrol at a local college or, as many of our students choose to do, she can stay with relatives and friends and enrol at a college in nearby Kathmandu. However, it is almost certain that she will still require further support to complete this stage of her education.

If she receives continued support from you during this period. providing she is successful, the college will award her an advanced diploma in her chosen subject.

Can my sponsored child go to university?

Like western education systems, depending on their exam result at the end of Year 12, she may be able to gain entry into a university. At this stage, many of our university students elect to find part-time work and do not need further support, but this is not always the case and, if you wish, you can continue supporting your student if she still needs your support.

What happens if my sponsored child is unable to enrol at a college or university

If she is unable to enter college or university, you can still assist her by funding further education courses or offering her financial support while she completes an apprenticeship or gains experience and financial stability in a fulfilling job.

What will happen after my sponsored child finishes her education?

With your support, your sponsored child will overcome poverty, become independent and gain worthwhile employment within their community. We also hope that your sponsored child will grow into adulthood and commit to giving something back to their community and inspire others, just as you have them.

Is the programme successful?

The success of this program is becoming evident as currently there are a number of students who are either enrolled in university or who are due to enrol this year.

Other students have found meaningful work and are receiving good salaries. Currently we have a number of students who are undergoing training as an apprentice.

All of these students have come from families who were unable to afford to send their children to school to receive a basic education.

Your commitment

Sponsorship of a student under this programme is an ongoing commitment and, before commencing the sponsorship, we ask each sponsor to commit to providing funds for the child until he or she completes Year 12. The sponsor can then choose whether they wish to continue the support while the student attends university or enrols in vocational training.

How much does it cost?

The cost of a full sponsorship for a young girl at Mitrata is (AUD) $576 per year.

If the cost of the sponsorship is over your budget you can elect to pay a part sponsorship choosing one of the following options:

Option 1 - You can identify a friend, relative or colleague who may be willing to share your sponsorship.

If you want to choose this option, Please talk with your friends, relatives and colleagues – if they are interested, we can contact them and set up the shared sponsorship with you. Each of you will be able to receive letters, school reports and photos from your sponsored child and you can both have contact with them if you want to.

Option 2 - You can elect to pay half of the sponsorship and we will find a ‘silent partner’ to pay the other half.

If you elect to approve a ‘silent partner' to cover the other half of the sponsorship, we'll notify you if we're successful, but we won't provide you with any further details about the other sponsor; nor will we provide your details to the second sponsor, although we will be fully transparent and will let that sponsor know that they will be sharing the sponsorship.
